The eagerly anticipated Nilambur-Nanjangud railway project, which will connect Nilambur in Kerala to Nanjangud in Karnataka via a rail link through Wayanad, has commenced its final location survey. The project, which has lingered for over a decade, is now progressing swiftly, according to the Nilgiri-Wayanad Railway and National Highway Action Council.

Using satellite imagery, the alignment for the railway line has been delineated, and an aerial survey has been initiated to prepare the final report. The Southern Railway took charge of the project and allocated Rs 5.9 crore for the Final Location Survey (FLS) in May 2023.

Addressing a press conference, Advocate T M Rasheed, the Convener of the Action Council, stated that the survey, conducted via helicopters, is well underway. The survey of land spanning 100 km from Nilambur has been completed, with the survey up to Nanjangud slated for completion shortly. The Action Council commended the central government for its dedication to advancing the project.

Nilambur Nanjangud Railway Project: The Nilambur-Nanjangud line, also known as the “Golden I.T. Corridor” or Wayanad Railway, proposes a broad gauge rail connection spanning 236 km from Nanjangud near Mysore, through Madhur in Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka, Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad district of Kerala, and Devala in Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu, reaching Nilambur in Kerala. The estimated cost of the project stands at Rs. 4266 crores, with the Planning Commission having sanctioned the estimated project cost during 2010.

Project Impact And Benefits

Once completed, this railway line is expected to significantly reduce travel time, enabling commuters to reach Bengaluru from Kochi in just 7 hours. It is estimated that over 50,000 people commute daily to Mysore and Bangalore from the Malabar and Nilgiri regions. The new railway line will drastically reduce travel time, with the journey from Sulthan Bathery to Mysore expected to take just 1 hour and Bangalore 3 hours.
