Nilambur Nanjangud Railway Project

The eagerly anticipated Nilambur-Nanjangud railway project, which will connect Nilambur in Kerala to Nanjangud in Karnataka via a rail link through Wayanad, has commenced its final location survey. The project, which has lingered for over a decade, is now progressing swiftly, according to the Nilgiri-Wayanad Railway and National Highway Action Council.

Nilambur Nanjangud Railway Line: Survey Progress

Using satellite imagery, the alignment for the railway line has been delineated, and an aerial survey has been initiated to prepare the final report. The Southern Railway took charge of the project and allocated Rs 5.9 crore for the Final Location Survey (FLS) in May 2023.

The survey of land spanning 100 km from Nilambur has been completed, with the survey up to Nanjangud slated for completion shortly. The Action Council commended the central government for its dedication to advancing the project.

Nilambur Nanjangud Railway Project: Historical Context

The history of the Nilambur-Nanjangud railway project dates back to the late 19th century, when the British initiated a survey for the railway. The most recent comprehensive survey prior to the ongoing one occurred in 2004, resulting in a report submitted to the planning commission after meticulous analysis.

The estimated cost of the project stands at Rs. 4266 crores, with the Planning Commission having sanctioned the estimated project cost during 2010.

Project Impact And Benefits

Once completed, this railway line is expected to significantly reduce travel time, enabling commuters to reach Bengaluru from Kochi in just 7 hours. Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Expansion: Connecting Delhi to Haridwar in 2 Hours!

Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Expansion

The Namo Bharat train, part of India’s Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), initially linking Delhi to Meerut, is poised for expansion. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is contemplating extending the Rapid Rail to Muzaffarnagar and Haridwar, promising enhanced connectivity and reduced travel times for thousands of daily commuters.

Advantages for Commuters: Delhi to Haridwar in 2 Hours

Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Expansion: The proposed extension holds significant promise for commuters in the National Capital Region in Western Uttar Pradesh. The journey from Delhi to Meerut, currently taking 45 minutes, will become even more convenient, while the planned extension to Haridwar is set to cut the travel time to a mere two hours.

NCR Planning Board Deliberations

Discussions surrounding the extension of the Namo Bharat train were a focal point during a recent meeting of the NCR Planning boards. Unanimous agreement was reached to conduct a comprehensive physical survey to assess the feasibility and execution of these extensions. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be formulated, considering factors such as social impact, development pace, and the number of beneficiaries.

RRTS Extended Up to Muzaffarnagar and Haridwar

Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Expansion: The expansion projects, if successfully implemented, have the potential to revolutionize the transportation landscape in the region. The surveys and detailed reports will play a crucial role in ensuring the seamless integration of these extensions, ushering in a new era of connectivity and convenience for the residents of the National Capital Region.

RRTS Progress

The RRTS, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as India’s first, has already marked its presence with the Namo Bharat rapid transit train, capable of reaching speeds up to 180 kmph. The operational 17-km priority section between Sahibabad and the Duhai Depot is now joined by the soon-to-be-operational 25-km stretch between Duhai and Meerut South station.

Republic Day Celebration Highlight

In an exciting development, a replica of the Namo Bharat train will feature on Uttar Pradesh’s tableau during the upcoming Republic Day celebrations. This tableau, highlighting the rich heritage, underscores the state’s commitment to progress and innovation through the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) train originating from Sahibabad station.

RRTS Project

With a design speed of 180 kmph, the RRTS is a new rail-based, semi-high-speed, high-frequency commuter transit system. Costing over ₹30,000 crore, the RRTS aims to facilitate intercity commuting every 15 minutes, with the frequency increasing to every five minutes when required. The completion of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor by 2025 is expected to allow commuters to travel between Delhi and Meerut in less than an hour.

Future RRTS Corridors

A total of eight RRTS corridors have been identified for development in the National Capital Region, with three prioritized for implementation in the first phase: Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut, Delhi-Gurugram-SNB-Alwar, and Delhi-Panipat.

Modi’s Vision for Progress

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who flagged off the country’s first RRTS on October 20, 2023, termed the Namo Bharat train a glimpse of India’s promising future. Riding with schoolchildren on the completed 17-km stretch, he highlighted the nation’s commitment to progress. The full 82-km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor is on track to be functional by 2025, marking a significant milestone in India’s transportation infrastructure.
