Restaurant on Wheels at Andheri Station: In a pioneering move to enhance passenger amenities, Western Railway’s Mumbai Central Division marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of its first-ever ‘Restaurant on Wheels’ at Andheri railway station. This innovative concept, the first of its kind over the Western Railway’s suburban section, promises an air-conditioned, high-quality dining experience for commuters.

Transforming Unsuitable Coaches into Swanky Restaurants

According to Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, the ‘Restaurant on Wheels’ at Andheri station was inaugurated on January 16, 2024. The groundbreaking concept involves repurposing old, unserviceable coaches into stylish restaurants mounted on wheels. This initiative aims to redefine the dining experience for railway commuters, offering a luxurious ambiance inside modified coaches.

Thakur highlighted that the fabrication work of transforming the coach into a state-of-the-art restaurant with an attached kitchen has been successfully completed at Andheri station. The restaurant is now ready to provide a delightful culinary experience. A key feature of the restaurant will be the globally acclaimed sweets and snacks for which Haldiram’s is renowned. Beyond that, the restaurant will serve a diverse range of multi-cuisine options, catering to the varied preferences of rail travelers.

Partnership with Haldiram’s: Elevating Dining Choices

The contract for operating this unique restaurant has been awarded to M/s OAM Industries, recognized under the popular brand name – Haldiram’s. The restaurant, with a seating capacity of 48 patrons, will operate round the clock to meet the needs of passengers. Additionally, a takeaway counter facility will ensure swift order collection for passengers on-the-go.

Expanding Reach: More ‘Restaurant on Wheels’ in the Pipeline

The initiative doesn’t stop at Andheri; similar ‘Restaurant on Wheels’ projects are underway at Borivali and Bandra stations. The broader plan includes the commissioning of these dining innovations at Surat, Bandra Terminus, Valsad, Lower Parel, Vasai Road stations, among others. The cumulative contract value of these three restaurants is expected to contribute Rs. 5.94 Cr as part of Non-Fare Revenue (NFR).

Western Railway’s venture into ‘Restaurant on Wheels’ aligns with its commitment to enhancing passenger experience and tapping into Non-Fare Revenue streams. As these innovative dining spaces roll out across key stations, they are poised to redefine the way commuters perceive and enjoy their journey, setting a new benchmark for railway services in India.
