The MMRCL, focusing on underground lines, currently operates two lines with two more in progress. Beyond the city limits, Navi Mumbai is gearing up for metro connectivity, with four lines under the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), soon transitioning to the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. Mumbai Metro Line 3: The Aqua Line

Among the transformative projects, Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, stands out. This underground marvel spans 33.5 km with 27 stations, connecting Colaba and Aarey. Let’s take a closer look at this significant development.

This 33.5 km underground line has 27 stations, with 26 of them underground, and the northern terminal Aarey at-grade. The stations include key locations such as Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk, CSMT, Kalbadevi, Girgaon, Grant Road, Mumbai Central, Mahalaxmi, Science Museum, Acharya Atre Chowk, Worli, Siddhivinayak, Dadar, Shitladevi, Dharavi, BKC, Vidyanagri, Santa Cruz, CSIA Terminal 1 (Domestic Airport), Sahar Road, CSIA Terminal 2 (International Airport), Marol Naka, MIDC, SEEPZ, and Aarey Colony.

Mumbai Metro Line 3 Ticket Fare

The fare structure, prices, and rules for Line 3 are yet to be announced. MMRCL plans to implement an open-loop automatic fare collection (AFC) system, allowing users to pay using QR codes on their phones, contactless pre-paid and post-paid smart cards.

Phase 1 is set to conclude in December 2023, with trials already underway in the Aarey to BKC segment. Public access is expected in early 2024. The entire Aqua Line is scheduled to open to commuters by the end of 2024. Currently, nine crucial trains required for Phase 1 are in position, with additional train sets on the way. Remarkably, 86% of the Aqua Line’s overall work has been completed, with Phase 1 boasting a progress rate of 93%.

Phase 2, facing challenges in densely populated areas, stands at an impressive 80% completion rate. Innovative approaches, including the time-consuming New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) Technology, have been employed to ensure seamless progress.

With over 90% completion and ongoing trials in Phase 1, the eagerly awaited Mumbai Metro Aqua Line 3 is poised to begin operations in early 2024. The entire 33.5 km stretch, connecting Colaba to SEEPZ, is set to be accessible to the public by the end of the same year, marking a monumental leap in Mumbai’s metro infrastructure. The eagerly awaited Phase I of the Mumbai Metro Line 3 underground corridor, connecting Aarey to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is poised to open its doors in April 2024.
