The Aarey Depot, crucial for the maintenance and operations of Mumbai Metro Line 3, has reached a noteworthy stage, with over 95 percent of the work completed. The depot, situated on a 25-hectare land parcel, is an integral component of the 33.5-km long fully underground Metro Line 3, linking Colaba with Seepz via Bandra Kurla Complex.

Aarey Depot Project Resumption and Progress

Aarey Depot Nears Completion for Mumbai Metro Line 3: Initially initiated in September 2017, the Aarey Depot’s construction faced a hiatus in November 2019 when then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray halted the work. However, under Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s administration, the project resumed on July 1, 2022. The significant progress, now at 95 percent completion, marks a crucial step forward in Mumbai’s metro infrastructure.

Aarey Depot Features and Facilities

Costing Rs 328 crore, the Aarey Depot is designed to accommodate 30 rakes of eight cars. Its infrastructure includes stabling lines, a workshop and maintenance building, operational control centre (OCC), access control building, auxiliary substation building, and an underground water tank, among other essential facilities. The comprehensive design ensures the efficient functioning of the depot to support Metro Line 3 operations.

Review and Future Operations

Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRC), recently conducted a thorough review of the ongoing work at the Aarey Depot. The completion of Phase 1 operations (BKC to Aarey) is pivotal for the metro project. Initially proposed to be operational by December 2023, the deadline has been extended to April 2024.

Dual Control Centres: Aarey and BKC to Oversee Metro Line 3 Operations

Operational Flexibility

Initially contemplating the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) Back Up Control Centre (BCC) for Phase 1 operations until the Aarey Depot is fully ready, plans have now evolved. As substantial work has been completed at Aarey, both Aarey’s main monitoring centre and BKC’s BCC will oversee Phase 1 operations, providing operational flexibility and redundancy.
